Smart Meters: Friend or Foe?

A couple months ago, I got a few calls from our electric company.  They were offering a program called “Simple Saver” for those who wanted it.  They offered a one time credit up front [after the installation of your direct load switch(s)], and then an annual credit of so much for each appliance that you enrolled (a/c unit, pool pump or water heater).  It sounded good. It sounded nice…and I was almost convinced.  But then I started thinking……When I asked questions about the program and it’s purpose, the lady on the phone told me that at times of peak power use, if there was a lot of strain on the grid, then they would be able to turn back the thermostat somewhat.  I told the lady that I would look into it, talk to my husband about it, and then make a decision.  I later decided not to get the installation of the product.
After reading up on this product, I’m glad I didn’t.  This program seems to be marketed different ways but, from what I’ve seen, is basically what many people refer to as a smart meter.
People who oppose the smart meters, do so for various reasons. Like  the “Stop Smart Meters” website, where it says “Fighting for health, privacy and safety”.  Check out their site StopSmartMeters.org to see a little more about the recent news in this debate.
Some of the questions I have in my mind about this topic (starting from least to greater) are: “What about all the jobs that are done away with because of these new smart meters?”  How did the meter usage get recorded in the past?  Oh yeah, from a person who would manually record every month so that you could get your bill.  What happens to their positon? Maybe that’s not the only job responsibility they had…Let’s hope so.
Also, I’ve heard, from listening to discussions on this debate, that these meters can record not just the amount of energy that your home is using, but which appliances are using the most and when.  According to this electric company’s website, their company has access to that information ONLY if you as a consumer want to share it with them.  This company also says the meters they use record energy usage every 15 minutes.  It is via a radio frequency which they say is very minimal.
Obviously at this point, every company is different in their terms…such as, some give you the choice to get a smart meter (like mine) and some mandate it and say they are no longer using the old meters (like the company in the link above).  Maybe the difference is that some of these are pilot programs, they are trying it out and seeing what the acceptance is in the community (I read info on many pilot programs like this) and seeing what the savings are like, etc.  The other programs, that are enforcing that everyone switch to these new meters (like the Naperville, Illinois woman who just got arrested) seem to be implementing these programs on a wide scale at a higher level already.
For me, I just don’t feel comfortable allowing any person or company to have that much control over something in my home.  It’s information collecting.  Whether the electric company sees it or not.  That information is still being collected and stored somewhere.  There’s a reason that this information is wanted and we have to think about the WHY? behind all of this.  Sure they give us a $10 credit and we feel all good and fuzzy inside because we feel like we’ve done our part to help lessen the load on the grid, thereby helping the environment.  But, is that really the point of all this?  I believe it is all about collecting and controlling!  While writing this, I found this video and he really makes many good points, all of which, relate to the fact that that these meters are an infringement on our privacy.  I’m not really concerned as much with the health risk, if there is any, because there are many health risks all around us every day and we will never be able to eliminate them completely.  However, when you are able to tell when I am home, when I am gone, when I have decided to use the woodstove instead of the heat pump, when I put in a humongous new fish tank that eats up the electricity, or if I decided to start some tomato and eggplant seeds in my back room and am using fluorescent type/grow lights to do so….when you can record and analyze and store my personal habits, I definitely think this is more than helping the power grid…This is about collecting data and power/control of people on a mass level.  Please take 3-4 minutes and watch the video below and most importantly, do your OWN research.  Make your own opinions NOW.  As I have said many times before: Know what you stand for.

Quotes of the Founders

Lately, I’ve been educating myself on the Constitution of the United States.  I am a firm believer in continuing to educate oneself throughout life.  Things I have researched in the past and which continue to be of interest to me are: gardening, running, writing, science and many, many more topics.  I kindof get “on” a topic, learn about it and then proceed to something else that interests me.  I often go back and refresh my mind on things I have learned and learn more about them.  I am building up my knowledge one block at a time.  I have been accused of being a “jack of all trades, master of none”, but I do not look at it this way at all.
It’s obvious to anyone who has read this blog lately that politics is a passion of mine.  I really never wrote much about it though.  I have to say a big thanks to Grumpa Joe at Grumpa Joe’s Place, because after reading his blog for a while, I began to think, “why can’t I share my thoughts and feelings on this topic as well?”.  And so, I began to.
Ok, I know my thoughts are wandering a little but, all this to share something I came across when reading pocket constitution I picked up.  In the beginning of the booklet, there are lots of quotes from our founding fathers and some of them are fascinating, seeing where we’re at today!

I don’t really need to expand on these quotes as they sum it up nicely on their own.  I am very passionate about our country and the principles of freedom we are founded upon.  My dream, and hopefully a goal at some point, is to teach small classes about what I’m learning: “The Basics of our Constitution”.  I’m not talking about at a school or anything, but at a grass roots level.  We as a people have got to get educated in this regard.  Our founders knew this and had a LOT to say about the importance of education. For example:

“A well-instructed people alone can be a permanently free people”  James Madison

Lastly and VERY importantly:

” A primary object…should be the education of our youth in the science of government.  In a republic, what species of knowledge can be equally important?  And what duty more pressing…than communicating it to those who are to be the future guardians of the liberties of the country?”                           George Washington

This is what I am…a future guardian of the liberties of this country.  And I do not take it lightly!  How about you?

Three Areas to Watch

I was going to email this link to some family and friends and I decided to write a little bit to go along with the email.  By the time I was done, I decided, I really should have just blogged it because I think it is very interesting and important article that I’m referring to.  So, that is why this post may be a little jumbled…it was written as an email, and in a hurry.

 This is a long article but is really worth the time to read if you can…even if you have to skim some parts.  Will scare the pants off of you though.  Basically talks about the 3 areas that we need to focus on right away as conservatives.  The first is the U.N. Arms Trade and Law of the Sea Treaties. The day AFTER the election, the U.S. backed a call to renew the debate on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT).  They want it to appear that this is just regulations on govt to govt transactions, and govt to dealer transactions.  However, it is potentially a GREAT threat to our 2nd amendment: the Right to Bear Arms!  Please keep a close, close eye on this.

The second issue is the EPA and all the environmental and energy regulations that are going on.  Very detailed…Very scary…especially the projected number of job losses due to regulation in eventually every industry. The article states

“The American Council for Capital Formation estimates that the new EPA regulations already in place will result in 476,000 to 1,400,000 lost jobs by the end of 2014.” This is just due to the regulations ALREADY IN PLACE!

Last, author Larry Bell, points out our grim situation with the supreme court judges.  If the wrong ones are put in place, we could forever lose our domestic gun rights in this nation.  He also makes some interesting points about the court of appeals, which is extremely important and one judge, in particular, who sits in the court of appeals:

“A key target of liberal ire appears to be Judge Brett Kavanaugh, who, at the age of 47, is young enough for consideration as a future Supreme Court nomination. The left knows that repeated media portrayals of conservative judges and their opinions as radical or out of the mainstream is an effective tactic.

The last paragraph is this:

With four more years ahead, and the Executive Branch, the Senate and the mainstream media stacked against conservative values, we have no choice but to prepare for a regulatory tsunami and just hold back the floods where we can. This isn’t going to be easy, but then, nobody ever promised us a White House Rose Garden. We must now double-down on our efforts to win it back before only restrictive thorns remain, and before our economic future turns to brambles.

Layoffs Abound…

I know, I’ve been doing a lot of posting about political topics, but I can’t help it.   I feel like this is a way for me to get things off my chest.  It’s a way to share important topics that need to get out, as well.
So, here are two very interesting articles I’ve linked.  The first is an article about financial experts and their view of Obama getting re-elected.  The second is an article listing business that have announced big layoffs since the re-election (you won’t believe how many!).  So, please read…Stay informed.  I know the election is over but that doesn’t mean as citizens that we can just go on with life unaware until the next presidential election is getting close.  We have to stay alert. We have to read up and know what our beliefs on the issues are.

Time to Hunker Down

The election was a big letdown to me this year.  I was so sure that Romney would win and that while our country would still have such a far way to go, that at least, he was the better choice.  I cried as I watched Romney’s concession speech because I thought of how badly America needs a leader who will be able to guide us through the tough times ahead.  Someone who actually has experience in turning around big businesses. That was Romney’s specialty.  He knew how to turn things around for businesses that were going down hill.  And isn’t the United States basically one of the largest “businesses” in the world?  We needed someone who would really work together with the congress and senate not just act like they want to.  Someone who would really try to keep America on the right path, not the wayward one we’re going down.  Someone who would bring unity, not divisiveness.
After Romney’s speech, I turned the tv off.  I couldn’t take a victory speech from Obama when I was so disappointed.  I didn’t want to hear about how he wanted to bring America together and move “Forward” when he has spent the last four years dividing this country while acting indignant when accused of doing so.
The next day, I adjusted my attitude and though saddened for America, faced the fact that Obama did win.  I thought about why.  This should’ve been an obvious choice.  How can Americans look the other way when our own men died in Benghazi?  How can people look the other way when the President repeatedly lies?  Our constitution is being buried alive.  Our country will live on but it is not a country with the same principles that we were founded on…that made us great.
I have just begun reading the book “Common Sense” by Glenn Beck which is inspired by Thomas Paine.  Beck writes that “America is a unique and special place that is a beacon of freedom for the entire world.”  I ask you, if we lose that, what do we have?  What is it that has allowed America to thrive for so long? It is our constitution, freedoms and rights.  There has never been anything else like the constitution and yet our nation has been choosing to move farther and farther away from it.
Americans need to prepare themselves for hard times ahead.  Proverbs 6: 6-8  “Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, provideth her meat in the summer and gathereth her food in the harvest.”  It’s time to hunker down and get busy.  I looked up the definition of “hunker down” and it means: “to settle in at a location for an extended period” or “to maintain a position and resist yielding to some pressure“.  The point is this: we have the same president for another four years, whether we like it or not, and we need to be prepared because it is not going to be an easy road ahead.  Inflation, gun control, socialism and more is coming our way.  When things get bad, I want to be able to take care of my own.  I want to be able to be a blessing to others.  I want to be prepared.  It’s time to hunker down my friends!

The Big Day is Finally Here!

Today, Americans have a monumental choice.  The differences are starkingly clear between the two presidential candidates.  The 2012 election is going to impact our nation in a gigantic way, either way it goes. I am full of excitement and terror at the same time.
Tomorrow, when we wake up, we will hopefully know who the winner is (if we don’t know tonight).  If Obama is somehow voted in, the left will rejoice and the right will be at home in bed, heartsick.  If Romney is victorious, the conservatives will be overjoyed and the left will act incredulous toward the truth.  Choose well America!  Choose with our future in mind. Stand on the side of truth and goodness and everything that is right.  Go out and use your right to vote and be thankful for the honor!

“Godly Voters”

This morning, in church, our pastor gave a sermon titled “Godly Voters”.  This is probably a topic that many minister, preachers, bishops etc. avoid.  This sermon did not focus on the candidates of this election, but rather, how the Bible affects our choice as voters.  I thought it was such an important message that I decided to share it here with you as well.

As Christians, we need to vote in a way that furthers the kingdom of God.
The question we should ask ourselves is: “Will this candidate advance policies that encourage righteousness or unrighteousness?”   As Christians, there are four basic non-negotiable issues that help to answer this question.

  1.  Judicial Appointments 
    Judges have a far greater influence than a president has.  They have a big influence on national righteousness and, unlike a president, can be in their position for years.
    Proverbs 28:4-5  “They that forsake the law praise the wicked: but such as keep the law contend with them. (5) Evil men understand not judgement: but they that seek the Lord understand all things.”
    Note: Our pastor actually quoted a verse from Isaiah on this point but I wasn’t quick enough to catch it.   On reading more verses on the topic of judgement, I found this one and thought it was interesting to add with this point.
  2. Abortion and Inalienable Rights
    Life is a God given right.  Government should protect that right.  When government doesn’t respect the right to life, the reality is that all of our rights is in jeopardy.  A politicians stand on the right to life will often show his leanings on our other rights.
    Isaiah 44:24a “Thus saith the Lord, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the Lord that maketh all things.”
    Psalm 139:13-15 “For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mothers womb.  I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well.  My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth.”
  3. Homosexuality and the Moral Law
    Leviticus 20:13 “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall  be upon them.”
    Romans 1: 24-27 “Because they did these things, God left them and let them go their sinful way, wanting only to do evil.  As a result, they became full of sexual sin, using their bodies wrongly with each other.  They traded the truth of God for a lie.  They worshiped and served what had been created instead of the God who created those things, who should be praised forever. Amen.  Because people did those things, God left them and let them do the shameful things they wanted to do.  Women stopped having natural sex and started having sex with other women.  In the same way, men stopped having natural sex and began wanting each other.  Men did shameful things with other men, and in their bodies they received the punishment for those wrongs.” New Century Version
    Historically, homosexuality always hurts a nation.  The Bible is clear about other types of sexual sin (adultery, living together outside of marriage) as well, but right now this issue has divided our country and the candidates of this years election.
  4. Public Religious Acknowledgements
    Proverbs 3:6 “In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path.”
    Think about what the candidates support…Prayer at school?  The ten commandments?
    A quote by George Washington applies here:
    “Whereas, it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.

    Finally, be careful what the candidates say.  More importantly, check their voting record!  What kind of fruits are they putting forth?Matthew 7:15-16 “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.  You shall know them by their fruits.”

Something to remember this year as you go to the pole is that if you are a christian, then you must keep a Godly perspective when voting.  Honor God with your vote.  Many people vote with a personal perspective but it’s not about us.  As Christians, we should be glorifying God in all we do.
